2.14.19 Snow Report

Hey snow lovers! The Alaska Avalanche Information Center here with your weekly snow report thanks to Kendall Toyota of Anchorage and Classic Country 100.9.

It’s Iron Dog race week. The free Donlin Gold Safety Expo is set for Friday from 1 to 8 pm at the Menard Sports Center in Wasilla. Come meet the racers and brush up on your own riding and backcountry travel skills. Race Starts Sunday at 11 am from Deshka Landing in Willow.

Local trails around the Mat-Su have been groomed and are reported to be in good condition across the region. Check the Mat Su Borough trails and Alaska State Parks reports for latest conditions. Stay alert, watch for overflow and carry safety equipment.

If you’re heading for the mountains be aware that forecasters are finding a persistent weak layer deep in the snowpack. Cross exposed slopes one at a time and avoid terrain traps like dips and gullies where snow can pile up.

See an avalanche or find danger in the backcountry? Post an observation at Alaska Snow dot org and help others avoid hazards. Sharing is caring!

Wherever you plan to play in the snow, remember to tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back, carry safety equipment and always check Alaska Snow dot org for the latest conditions and training opportunities before heading out.

That’s it for this week, travel smart and train like a pro so you can live to ride another day
