General Observations

Transitional Zone: 4500’/E-aspect/Clear-broken/Calm to Light N-wind/20F. Very distinct layering at different elevation bands. Below 1500′ in alder clearing, refrozen new snow was over rotten snow on a hard crust, observed some collapsing. From 1500′ to 2500′, surface snow had softened on a supportable crust, but new snow/old snow was reactive in a test pit, with results CT14 SC & ECTP 20 down 40cm. The MLK-day crust was located down 145cm with 2-3mm facets sort of frozen together. Above 3,000′ the snowpack was noticeably more contiguous, used a probe to investigate multiple areas. The new snow/old snow was stickier, without as distinct of an interface. Surface hoar was forming everywhere above treeline. Light north wind picked up in the later afternoon. Mid-day sun felt warm. Don’t let your guard, especially down in the strange mid-lower elevation snowpack, the structure is still poor.

  • With binoculars spotted a D2+ slide on a W-aspect at 5,000′ in the Takshanuk Mountains
  • Driving out the road saw D2 slide on SW-aspect at 1500′ above Southeast Road Builders
