SNOWPACK DISCUSSION: Warming has created a top heavy snowpack. 3/4 inch of water equivalent added weight with warm snow and/or rain below 500′ since Christmas eve. The snowpack will be sensitive to human trigger, especially where wind affected. 

Windslab avalanches have the possbility to step down to deeper persistent weak layers, increasing their size and destructive potential.

The variability of depth and structure due to the outflow wind events and cold temperatures so far this season create a lot of uncertainty about our snowpack’s stability. Choose conservative routes, avoiding terrain traps.

The portside snowpack is generally more uniform and stronger than interior of Thompson Pass.

  • Cloud obscured avalanche obs Christmas Day. Many signs of instability have been seen and felt by skiers and riders over the last week in a variety of areas: cracking, whumphing, and collapsing.
  • Fri Dec 23   Bro Bowl above MP 29: Snowmachine and rider triggered hard slab in steeps near rockbands, northeast aspect, ~4500′
  • Fri Dec 23   Mile Post 37: A few southerly slopes 3500-4500′ loaded by north wind released naturally, windslab & storm snow to size 2
  • Thur Dec 22   Small dry loose sluffs in rocky and steep terrain
  • Thur Dec 22   Below the NE ridge of 27 Mile Peak: D2 storm slab release, north aspect above the Worthington Glacier seen from Little Girls.

Weather Forecast: With the brunt of this storm tracking to the south and west of us, we have not received the precip amounts that were forecasted. Temperature has warmed significantly, spiking to 39F at sea level, with the freezing line near 500′. East wind will keep things from going ballistic, with slight cooling by Tuesday. Flurries with additional accumulation of 1-3″.
