Avalanche Problems

We received 4 to 5 feet of mostly dry light snow this week at all elevations. Moderate to strong east wind loaded western aspects. Several natural slab avalanches have occurred throughout this storm cycle. Uncertainty exists about the New Year’s weak layer on slopes that have not released yet. Conservative terrain choices should be exercised as the snowpack adjusts. Overall, our snow pack is relatively shallow, most of it is new, and there is much loose snow for entrainment.

Expect mostly dry and cold weather this weekend. Northerly winds may shift the hazard towards southerly slopes. Otherwise, the avalanche hazard should slowly decrease through the weekend.
